2014 Winnipeg New Designers Fashion Show

The strong aroma of hairspray, racks upon racks of clothing and shoes, and the hustle and bustle of models backstage can only mean one thing: a fashion show is about to begin! On October 15, six aspiring fashion designers from MC College’s Fashion Design and Apparel production program showcased their collections in front of an audience of local fashion designers, friends and family, and influential members of Winnipeg’s art and fashion industry.
In attendance were Aurrora Dekker (Buyer, Ricki’s), Riel Dion (Director, Private Vocational Institutions), Lennard Tyler (local fashion designer), Alena Zharska (Director of Wardrobe, Royal Winnipeg Ballet), Black Caviar Productions, Fashion Incubator and staff from MC College, to name a few.

With Winnipeg’s longstanding history in fashion, the show was a celebration of new blood into the city’s fashion scene and was a “little glimpse into what is new and emerging and how Winnipeg’s cultural fabric — no pun intended — influences local design “says Connie Tamoto from the Winnipeg Free Press.

The emerging designers: Madison Tooth, Cassandra Larocque, Domonique Stewart, Carrie-Ann Wilson, Ruta Tewelde and Francesca Salenga were required to design and create eight oufits. They found inspiration for their collections from many facets, including Japanese street fashion, cultural backgrounds, Ancient Egypt and the Victorian era. The fashion show included pieces such as delicate chiffon sheaths, metallic mens-wear pieces and flirty pastel cocktail dresses. It also showcased clothing pieces that the graduates created during their training: corsets and dresses inspired by movies such as ‘The Avengers’, ‘Queen of the Damned’ and ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’.

Every year, graduates from MC College’s Fashion Design and Apparel Production program showcase their emerging collections. In this twelve month program, graduates learn everything from creating a clothing line to pattern grading and construction. They also gain studio experience and have the opportunity to complete an internship with fashion houses such as Elie Saab, Zac Posen and Gentle Fawn.
