READY TO SHINE 6: A Cut Above the Rest

rts6 1.png

From bougie dresses to blouses channeling Coachella vibes, Fashion Studies students from 7 Edmonton Public High Schools got the chance to show off their designs at Kingsway Mall’s Ready to Shine event. Now in its 6th year, the event challenges High School students to design and construct garments for evening, career and casual wear. They also made garments out of unconventional materials such as recycled newspaper, shopping bags and bubble wrap.

As a proud sponsor, year after year, we were excited to see the designs of Edmonton’s next top fashion designers. The garments were modelled on the runway by High School Students and local celebrities such as: Nicole Crosbie (95.7 Cruz FM), Kimberley Wynn (CTV), Stacey Brotzel (CTV), Dana Giesbrecht (Shaw TV), Nancy Carlson (Global TV) and Ami Amato (Up 99.3 FM). The show did not disappoint….it was LIT!!

Winnipeg Fashion Design Open House

fashion OP

Last week, Winnipeg MC College hosted an Open House for the Fashion Design program. Friends, family members, fashionistas and the public, came through our doors to meet the students and get a sneak preview of their New Designers Collection.

With 4 weeks left in the 12 month program, students were ecstatic to unveil their months of hard work in sketching, drafting and production. From casual to evening wear, the collections included sheer fabrics, cut-outs, lace and eye catching prints. Students drew inspiration for their clothing designs from various outlets: a visit to the art gallery, local architecture and past fashion icons etc.

Throughout the event, students received feedback on their designs, gained insight into their target market and learned how to promote themselves.

seeing their work on display gave them confidence and made them realize that their hard work over the year was paying off. The Open House will help motivate them to cross the finish line” said MC College Fashion Design Instructor, Brenda Speirs-Fryatt.

Congrats to the following students. You did an amazing job at the Open House!

MC College in the Community: November

Every month, MC College students volunteer at several community events. These events give the students the opportunity to give back to the community by allowing them to use their skills for the benefit of others. In addition, these events allow our students to network with potential clients and expand their technical experience. Here are a few of the events that MC College students volunteered at in November:

CATO fashion show, ‘The Final Cut’- Kelowna, BC

Hairstyling and Esthetic students from the Kelowna MC College campus had the opportunity to be the official Hairstylists and Makeup Artists for the Center for Arts and Technology’s fashion show, ‘The Final Cut’. In addition to creating connections with new fashion designers, photographers and models (great for the NAHA’s!), MC College students were able to experience what it was like to work behind the scenes at a fashion show.

It was exciting to learn in such a fast-paced environment, which helped show that there are plenty of different and unique opportunities for Hairstylists. It was a welcomed change to our usual routine and I am pleased that MC College offers these types of volunteer/working experience for their students…”-Kylie Florenu, student at Kelowna MC College

Engineering Head Shave- Edmonton, AB

On November 22 2013, Hairstyling students from the Edmonton MC College campus volunteered to shave over 40 heads at the engineering head shave fundraiser at the University of Alberta. This tenth annual event raises funds and awareness for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

@mccollegegroup your students are such an important part of our head shave events. Thank you for helping us redefine the future of cancer.” -@albertacancer

Festival of Trees (November 24-30)- Saskatoon, SK

To get into the Holiday spirit, students and staff from the Saskatoon MC College campus decorated a Christmas tree for Saskatoon’s Festival of Trees. The ‘Dashing through the Snow’ tree, sold for $750! This annual event engages the community by providing an opportunity for local businesses and school groups to display and sell their decorated Christmas tree, with all proceeds going to the Saskatchewan MS Clinical Research Chair Campaign through Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation.

October 18, 2013 – Last night, MC College Alumni: Nicole Campre, Sid Negium and Alisha Schick showcased their designs in the fashion show at the 17th annual Syncrude presents Fashion with Compassion. Their designs will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, in support of Sorrentino’s Compassion House.

Each of the designers created an illustration of their designs to reflect the shows theme: “Make a Statement”. Nicole Campre made her creation a statement of thought, relaxation and peace; designing a modern kimono robe with a plunging neckline. Alisa Schick of Suka Clothing designed a high collared, black and white gown with metal studs. Sid Negium, a designer based in Toronto, took a modern twist on the little black dress.

In a local newspaper article, the designers were asked why they chose to participate:

Nicole Campre:  “I love what it represents and what it stands for. It’s such an honour to be involved — it’s such an amazing show for the community and it’s for a good cause. We’re really excited.”

Alisha Schick — Suka Clothing: “I always wondered how I could be a part of it,” she says of the show. She, like so many people, has been touched by cancer affecting loved ones. “It’s a very familiar cause to me; it really does hit home. I don’t think people are aware that this (Compassion House) exists in Edmonton and I think what they’re doing is amazing.”

Fashion with Compassion is an annual fundraiser for Compassion House Foundation, in support of Sorrentino’s Compassion House. Every year, the show is sold out to an audience of over 1400 guests, helping to make a statement about the importance of the healing journey of women fighting breast cancer.

Blind bids for the one-of-a kind pieces are accepted from Oct. 12 until Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. Winners will be notified Oct. 24
