READY TO SHINE 6: A Cut Above the Rest

rts6 1.png

From bougie dresses to blouses channeling Coachella vibes, Fashion Studies students from 7 Edmonton Public High Schools got the chance to show off their designs at Kingsway Mall’s Ready to Shine event. Now in its 6th year, the event challenges High School students to design and construct garments for evening, career and casual wear. They also made garments out of unconventional materials such as recycled newspaper, shopping bags and bubble wrap.

As a proud sponsor, year after year, we were excited to see the designs of Edmonton’s next top fashion designers. The garments were modelled on the runway by High School Students and local celebrities such as: Nicole Crosbie (95.7 Cruz FM), Kimberley Wynn (CTV), Stacey Brotzel (CTV), Dana Giesbrecht (Shaw TV), Nancy Carlson (Global TV) and Ami Amato (Up 99.3 FM). The show did not disappoint….it was LIT!!

Open house was a success!

If you attended our Open House last weekend, thanks! Over 300 people came through our doors to check out our Hairstyling, Esthetics and Fashion Design* programs, and experience the vibrant student atmosphere.

Our students were available to give tours of the campus and do complimentary services such as manicures, hand massages and mini hair make-overs. Both guests and students had a blast with our MC College frame at the photo booth:

In another classroom, there were Financial Advisors from BMO, RBC and CIBC available to answer questions about financing and funding.

MC College in the Community: January

Whether it’s pink hair or a new hair cut, the month of January was about helping the community by giving makeovers to those in need and to help raise awareness for children battling cancer. MC College students use their skills for the benefit of others, while at the same time expanding their technical experience by volunteering at community events.

#PaintingYegPink- Edmonton, Alberta

On January 16th, Edmonton MC College buzzed with excitement as students and staff “painted Edmonton pink” at the annual Hair Massacure event for cancer. From 6AM to 5PM, students pinked over 40 heads and beards (eyebrows included!). But what’s “pinking”, you ask? Pinking is when people raise funds for children battling cancer by bleaching and coloring their hair fuschia pink. Local celebrity, Bridget Ryan from Breakfast Television was on location to interview participants while they got their hair bleached and pinked by our students. This year, the campus was visited by a “furry special” guest, Freddy the Poodle, who wore pink extensions to help participants raise awareness! The second part of Hair Massacure will take place on February 14 at West Edmonton Mall, where MC College students will assist with shaving heads.

Student For a Day: Esthetics Program

dafda

It’s been a year or two since I’ve stepped into a classroom but a few weeks ago I got the chance to be an Esthetics student at MC College. As part of their ‘Student For a Day’ program, my day started out with a tour of the campus: the Artego Creative Lounge (where students from the Esthetics, Hairstyling and Fashion Design program collaborate to create looks for a photo shoot), makeup room, classrooms and spa area. In the spa facility, there were several massage/facial rooms where students practice on each other and do services on clients.

In one of the spa classrooms, new students to the Esthetics program were practicing leg waxes on each other. In another classroom, student were working on nail art and capturing their work on Instagram and Facebook. During my day as a student, I was treated to a spa manicure where I was also shown the step by step learning and evaluation process that students go though for each service they do on clients.

wax

After a morning of pampering, I was shown proper leg waxing techniques and was able to put my waxing “skills” to the test by waxing the Esthetic students’ legs and brows (I still can’t believe they trusted me to wax their brows!!). I was also able to speak to a few of the students about their experience at MC College and why they were interested in the industry:

Student For a Day’ is a program that helps prospective students learn about the industry and their future career path. In this one day program, Students take part in theoretical and practical learning, and get an insight of what life is life as a student at MC College. The ‘Student For a Day’ program is open to High School students interested in a career in the beauty industry and for those who are looking for a career change.
